The House of Ligne is one of Europe's oldest and most distinguished noble families, with origins tracing back to the eleventh century in Belgium. The family rose progressively through the ranks of European nobility, from barons in the twelfth century to Princes of the Holy Roman Empire in 1601, when Lamoral I received that title from Emperor Rudolf II. Since then, the Princes of Ligne have held the personal dignity of Grandees of Spain, one of the highest honours of the Spanish Crown, and across four centuries multiple Princes of Ligne, from Lamoral I in 1599 to Michel, the present 14th Prince, in 2011, have been invested as Knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the most prestigious chivalric order shared by the Spanish and Austrian crowns. The family's ties to reigning European royal houses extend into the present day: Ernest, 10th Prince of Ligne, is the great-grandfather of Stéphanie, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, wife of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, linking the House of Ligne directly to the reigning Grand Ducal House of Luxembourg. Prince Edouard Lamoral de Ligne de La Trémoille, born 1976, represents the present generation of this dynasty. His wife, Princess Isabella de Ligne-La Trémoille, born Isabella Orsini on 2 December 1974, is an Italian actress and, by marriage, a member of the House of Ligne; her right to the style of Highness is legally recognised in Belgium, not a courtesy title. She studied at the Actors Studio in Los Angeles and has built an extensive career in Italian cinema and television.
